The novelty edition combines the manufacturer’s masterful expertise with technical experimentation, knowledge with distinctiveness and a love of watchmaking with a passion for superb finishes and details. For us watchlovers, what is left to do is just to witness how many WOWs it will gain with its official debut in SIHH 2011.

The genuine horological marvel highlights a diamond crocodile carefully guarding the time. Crafted in white gold with emerald eyes, the reptile is graciously surrounded by a bed of water lilies in translucent red and white enamel. What’s more, we are allowed to appreciate the wonderful dreamlike quality to the artistically beautiful flying tourbillon. Doing good for us, the watchmaker has inversed the movement to show the mechanism and its skeletonised bridges, which now form part of the decor.

Beating as the heart of this jewelry timepiece is an unique flying tourbillon movement – the calibre 9458 MC, embellished with the Geneva Seal. Constructed from 167 components, it runs at a frequency of 21,600 vph and gives an advantage of a 50-hour power reserve. Instead of being found in the conventional way, protected between the bridges and plate of the movement, the flying tourbillon of the new Cartier watch is presented as an amazing design feature. The carriage seems to “fly” over the bridges, as if being suspended above the dial.

The technical risks linked this superb solution thus required the master watchmakers to pay particular attention to the design of the carriage, in order to ensure that the tourbillon’s shock-resistance remained unaffected. It is this feature that gives this round watch its timekeeping rhythm. Set entirely with diamonds, it took the master watchmakers over 50 hours of work.

The case is crafted in rhodium-plated 18K white gold with a 44.5mm diameter. It demonstrates a circular-grained crown in the same material and set with a diamond. The water-resistance is down to 30 meters. The new Cartier watch is finished with a black brushed canvas strap fitted with a white gold ardillon buckle decorated with diamonds. Only 50 pieces will be made available for the Cartier Tourbillon and Crocodile Replicas.
